Behind the Scenes
I used to think the experience on the page was the one worth having and that all the stuff that went on behind the scenes were unimportant to the reader. The internet age has proven otherwise. I don't have many photos outside of what was taken for assignments but in the following slideshow, you can see a bit more than what was featured on the page. I've also added some celebrity encounters and some photos of events I've attended. If an image pertains to a feature I've been allowed to show on this site, please click on the hyperlinks to the appropriate tab under the Telling Stories category in the main menu bar above. I will add more photos when I can, so check back if you'd like!

Australian Survivor Launch Party, Sydney, May 11, 2016
After covering Survivor in the US, I was not expecting to resume the beat in Australia, but Network Ten got down to the ambitious task of relaunching the series here with a cast of 24 and 55 days of action. At the centre of if is host Jonathan LaPaglia, an actor for whom this would be his first reality TV gig. Needless to say, he did great, and he has an affable charm and ease.
Alfie Allen, Game of Thrones Promo, March 2016
Theon Greyjoy is neither arrogant nor tortured in real life! I interviewed Alfie Allen of Game of Thrones for Who Magazine and after our chat, seeing how happy I and the publicists were at meeting each other after months of communicating via email, he suggested a photo was in order. This was taken by Showcase rep Vanessa Hollins.

Seattle, 2011, "The Sons Also Rise," People Magazine
Writing and reporting do not happen in a vacuum. For one of the last stories I did as a full-time editor at People, I traveled to Seattle to catch up with Jake and Josh Harris, crab fishermen and sons of the late Cornelia Marie captain Phil Harris of Deadliest Catch fame. Here I am in the red coat with Jake to my left and Josh in the LFS hoodie. Photographer Corey Arnold is in the blue knit cap and Discovery Channel publicist Laurie Goldberg is in black on the far right. The crew also consists of Corey's photo assistant and two stylists. You can read the end result under the People Magazine tab for Telling Stories.
Seattle 2011, "The Sons Also Rise," People
Jake and Josh Harris, more used to hauling large crab pots in sub-zero temperatures on the Bering Sea, held up pretty well on a long shooting day for People. Corey Arnold took photos of them at both of their houses before driving down to Fisherman's Wharf in Seattle for some final images.
Malibu 2011, "My Life In Pictures," People
Getting a chance to meet Bert the Chimney Sweep in person was not a chance taken lightly. Fortunately, Dick Van Dyke welcomed us into his Malibu home and even had coffee and donuts at the ready. He was generous with his time, doing a little soft-shoe in one picture and playing piano in another, and told great stories about the tremendous collection of photos and paintings in his house, including a portrait of his idol, Stan Laurel, above the piano. "A wonderfully charming English gentleman," Van Dyke says. "I told him that I stole a lot from him and he said, 'I noticed that!'" Read the story under the People Magazine tab.
Malibu 2009, "At Home with Mark and Roma," People
Alas, this text will fall over the visages of Roma Downey's beautiful Irish wolfhounds! But they were gentle giants and very well behaved. Spending time with Roma and Mark Burnett made me realize just how appreciative they were of their success — every element of their home was thoughtful and well curated. Their talk of gratitude was not empty, either; while I was there, the couple were on the phone to their kids, reminding them to write thank you notes for gifts they had received.
Malibu 2009, "At Home with Mark and Roma," People

Mark Burnett is a collector of classic American cars, like this restored milk truck. We went on a short drive south on the Pacific Coast Highway, where he reminisced about our time at the press junket for Survivor: Palau. To see more of Mark and Roma's home, please find the article under People Magazine in the Telling Stories section.
Survivor: Palau with Mark Burnett, 2004
You know how Mark Burnett titled one of his memoirs Jump In! Even If You Don't Know How to Swim? Curiously the book came out after he showed me the sunken WWII wreckage in Palau and then offered me swimming lessons.
Burbank 2011, "That Thing I Do: Michael Vartan," People
Michael Vartan arrived at Pickwick Ice in Burbank, Calif., on a Sunday morning with a bag full of gear and a bundle of energy. He couldn't wait to share his passion for hockey. Also, "a shoot without makeup?" he said happily. "This is great!" Sure enough, you could see his joy even as he demonstrated to photographer Emily Shur how he could spray the lens with ice for a more dramatic picture. He told me he hoped his love of the sport could earn it more fans. "I mean," he said, "all these kids, to a man in the NHL, are well-spoken… and embody such values that America's all about." To read the story, go to the People Magazine tab under Telling Stories.
June 2013, "Brad Pitt Shines at the Star," Who.com
Outside the Star Casino in Pyrmont, Paramount Pictures threw out the red carpet for Brad Pitt during the Australian launch of his film World War Z. Yes, it was pronounced "World War Zed" here! My position on the carpet placed me across from the announcer platform, where TV presenter Richard Wilkins had the honor of counting down the minutes until the arrival of Mr. Pitt.
June 2013, "Brad Pitt Shines at the Star," Who.com
So here he is, making his way down the carpet! I am with two other print reporters at the far end, right before the dash into the theater. Brad Pitt did stop to speak to us, however. If you'd like to read my coverage of Brad Pitt Down Under, find the story under the Who Magazine tab in Telling Stories.
May 1994, Sesame Street, The Furry Arms
My biggest celebrity! Grover. I was lucky to get on Sesame Street three times, but here is my first, doing a piece on Tarah Lynne Schaeffer, the first child in a wheelchair on the series. To read the story, click here.
Los Angeles 2010, "American Idols Live," pre-tour party
Both Jessica Herndon and I covered American Idol's ninth season and had gotten to know the contestants so well, we celebrated their survival with a dinner at the London. We were joined by Michael Cilnis and Chloe Ellers, the tireless reps from BWR who worked with them 24/7. Pictured left to right: Siobhan Magnus, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Katie Stevens, Didi Benami, Tim Urban, Aaron Kelly, Jessica Herndon, Cynthia Wang.
Beverly Hills, 2013, PBS "The Hollow Crown" presentation
I got to relive an old gig by attending the Television Critics Association summer press tour in 2013 for sessions with ABC and PBS. Tweeting out remarks made by actor Tom Hiddleston (center) in regard to his interpretation of Henry V got me some very nice attention by fan groups (such as the lovely HiddlesGoddesses) and Tom himself, who is now following me on Twitter. Pictured from left are producers David Horne and Gareth Naeme.
Beverly Hills 2013, PBS Sesame Street presentation

This is not the first time I've met Cookie Monster. Back when I worked in People's New York bureau, I went to Sesame Street twice and have reported on the Muppets and muppeteers for several features. I even have a photo with Grover. But yes, it was nice to see Cookie again.
Los Angeles 2011, The Men of Revenge Come to the People Office
Yes, sometimes attractive men show up at your workplace bearing a Coolhaus ice cream truck. Such was the case when (from left) Nick Wechsler, Connor Paolo, Josh Bowman, and Gabriel Mann, along with the PR teams from ABC and Sony, chatted with the staff in a meet-and-greet for the first season of Revenge. It was fun catching up with Mann, with whom I spoke for a feature on director Allison Anders 10 years before.
Hollywood 2008, "Howie Mandel Gets a Star on the Walk of Fame," People
On Sept. 4, 2008, Howie Mandel celebrated his series Deal Or No Deal going into syndication and his getting a star on the Walk of Fame. He told me, "Here's a guy who's the ultimate germaphobe, and the biggest accolade I've ever received is something that is going to be stepped on, spit on, stained and made filthy!" Mandel partied just fine later on with some Suitcase Models in close proximity.
Paddington 2014, "My Kitchen Rules," Who Magazine
Although her and her fiancé's flat may be small, My Kitchen Rules contestant Anna Lisle accommodated the Who crew with a welcome openness. She and Andrew Turner had a blast while talking about their wedding plans and showing off their Victorian terrace home. To read the feature, please check out the Who Magazine tab under Telling Stories.
New York City 2004, "The Bachelorette Goes New York," People
I got to go on a group date at a New York Knicks game with hot guys in October 2004! Okay, it's not as exciting in that I was covering it for People and not actually the bachelorette. That honor befell Jen Schefft. Meanwhile, in some downtime, we got to shoot hoops at Madison Square Garden. Here's host Chris Harrison showing off his, uh, form, with Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss (black T-shirt) in the background.
Los Angeles 2008, "Dancing With the Stars," People
Dancing With the Stars is one of many reality shows I've covered and I've been lucky to have had the chance to take friends and family to tapings. The work for us comes after the show ends and all press converge to the dance floor and stand behind white stanchions waiting to talk to the couples. Here are Julianne Hough and partner Cody Linley.
Sydney 2013, "The ARIAs," Who.com
This is the press room at the Star Event Centre where reporters can watch the performances and speeches at the ARIAs, Australia's version of the Grammys, and later interview winners. In the green dress is singer Samantha Jade. To read my coverage of the ARIAs, go to the Who Magazine tab under Telling Stories.
Los Angeles 2007, "Blondie in My Office," People
Photo by Cecilia de la Paz.
Am I going to pass up an opportunity to take a photo with Debbie Harry? Of course not. She came to the People office and I and Pamela Warrick went in for the shot. Love her.
Beverly Hills 2010, "Farewell to Larry King Live," People
Larry King marked the end of his long-running CNN show Larry King Live with a celebration at Wolfgang Puck's Spago. Once King arrived, it was a crush to get close to him, but I managed this shot of him thanking everyone for coming. One highlight of the party was getting to tell Jimmy Kimmel how much I loved the Christoph Waltz "Der Humpink" sketch and having him elaborate on the making of it.
May 26, 2007, Los Angeles, Lisa Ling and Paul Song wed
How wonderful to see Lisa Ling happy and joyful. She married Paul Song at the old train station in Los Angeles and had catering from Din Tai Fung. Also a relief — attending as a guest and not as a reporter! Cheers to the Ling-Songs and their growing family.
Studio City 2010, "Glee's Education Through Music Event"
Having covered the FOX series Glee from its start, producers and reps invited me to participate in a holiday charity event benefitting the Education Through Music program. It was a nice chance to just speak casually with the cast and crew and help a bunch of excited kids make their own paper instruments.
December 2006, Hollywood Rock Star Supernova party
Yes, partying with Tommy Lee. It's all part of covering Rock Star: Supernova for People. And yes, that's Pro Publica reporter extraordinary Charles Ornstein right alongside Tommy!
Beijing 2008, On the set of the Today Show
In the scramble to secure an interview with swimmer Michael Phelps, I finally landed set access privileges for the Today Show, where I waited to speak with Phelps in the time between his intro and his interview with Matt Lauer. In the process, I got to watch Daniel Boulud cook (with Meredith Vieira and Al Roker watching). I've interviewed them all before, but Boulud was especially appreciative of my past coverage and invited me to eat at his new restaurant in Beijing. I mean, of course!
Los Angeles 2008, Creative Arts Emmy Awards
If you've ever wanted to see what a big-time award show after party looks like, here is a peek at the post-Creative Arts Emmy Awards festivities at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown LA.
Cabo San Lucas 2005, "Rob and Amber's Honeymoon," People
I met Amber Brkich and "Boston" Rob Mariano in Panama while covering Survivor: All-Stars, watching them go from competitors to lovebirds and being on-hand for their engagement at that season's finale when Amber won, Rob proposed, and their career as Reality TV's King and Queen took off. After reporting along with Ulrica Wihlborg at their wedding in the Bahamas in April 2005, I followed them to the One & Only Palmilla for their honeymoon, which doubled as my and my husband's "pre-wedding honeymoon," too!
Hollywood Hills 2010, "At Home with Cheryl Burke," People
I couldn't resist taking a photo of Cheryl Burke's Dancing With the Stars mirror-ball trophy while at her house for our at-home feature. You can read the story under the People Magazine tab for Telling Stories.
New York 2003, CBS Upfront with NCIS
There was actually a time when NCIS was not on the air. I know, right? Well, this was the start of it all. People TV editor Cindy Sanz (center) got me to take a photo with her and the cast of NCIS when the show was first shown to advertisers in May 2003. In the photo, from left: publicist Diane Ekeblad, Michael Weatherly, Sanz, Mark Harmon, Pauley Perrette, me, and David McCallum.
New York 1999, "Billy Joel: Millennium 2000," People
What an exciting time to be at People magazine. It was Dec. 31, 1999, and every reporter had to cover something happening at the the dawn of Y2K. I got to talk to Billy Joel, who reflected on his decades-long career, and then got to see him perform at Madison Square Garden. My friend Erika and I later joined him and his crew backstage for a bit of New Year's cheer. That's how my 21st century started. So cool.
October 2001, Eagle Rock, CA, Ben Folds Rock 'n Bowl at All Star Lanes
Todd Beeton and I had a blast bowling while Ben Folds was performing a set at the All Star Lanes in Eagle Rock. You could either watch the show or bowl (with the show on a screen). We bowled. But to see what it was like inside, someone kindly recorded video of 'Weird' Al Yankovic joining Ben Folds for "Song For the Dumped." And Glen Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket was there, too.

Photos by Damian Bennett.
As part of Peter Castro's January 2013 cover story on Jennifer Lopez for People, I and photographer Damian Bennett were sent to capture backstage action at her Dec. 18, 2012 Sydney show. Clockwise from top left: Manager Benny Medina and choreographer/boyfriend Casper Smart watch on; Lopez with son Max and an assistant; Lopez doing post-show interviews; Lopez's mom Guadeloupe Rodriguez having a blast.
Jan. 26, 2003, San Diego, Super Bowl XXXVII with Mary Green
If you knew me and Mary, you would know this was the dream. We were able to cover a Super Bowl together. I was later able to tell Warren Sapp, when he was on Dancing with the Stars, that I had actually met him earlier in his career, in the locker room at the time of his victory.
Las Vegas 2003, Weekend with ABC and Andrew Firestone
In the midst of covering Andrew Firestone's Bachelor season and beyond, I took a trip to Vegas one weekend for some promotional events involving Firestone and ABC reps Alison Rou (second from right) and Jennifer Verti (far right). The kicker — at the airport, Jen won a ton of quarters from a slot machine just as we were about to board. Alison and I had laundry money for weeks!
May 2003, New York, UPN upfronts with Eve
Rapper-actress Eve was at UPN (remember that? pre CW?) to launch her eponymous sitcom, which lasted three seasons.
May 1996, New York, CBS Upfront with Ray Romano
Before Everybody Loves Raymond, there was just the comic Ray Romano. You can see how leery we both are of taking a photo. I guess it would be easier these days with cameraphones a plenty, but this required some effort on the part of Ray's manager to get us together for this Polaroid! This was just before his sitcom would launch him into the stratosphere.
Fort-du-Bas 1999, "Fantastic Journey," People
When I was working in the Miami bureau for People, I flew to the island nation of Guadeloupe to interview Tori Murden, the first American woman to row solo across the Atlantic, who had arrived there after 81 days at sea. On the flight back to the States, though she had a window seat, Tori never once looked out of it to the ocean below. I suppose he had 'been there, done that.' Read the story here.
Boston 1997, Jeanette Lee at the AAJA Convention
Here I am with former world No. 1 billiards player Jeanette Lee, the Black Widow! Hers was the first profile I was allowed to write at People. The story went from a three-pager to a two-pager and finally just a page, but Jeanette was always appreciative. You can read the text of that piece, which came out in 1995, here.
Santa Monica 2010, Small Gift: Sanrio 50th Anniversary Party
Of course I went to Sanrio's 50th anniversary party at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. And here I am, posing with My Melody. Yes.

You see, sometimes when you cover press events, they do things like this.
Beverly Hills January 9, 2009, Winter TCA Press Tour
This is Dave Salmoni (kneeling), Animal Planet presenter and naturalist. He brought along a friends (one furry) to promote his show Into the Pride.
West Hollywood 2009, Berlin at the House of Blues Sunset Blvd.

While I always was a fan of Berlin, I got to meet Teri Nunn while covering Mark Burnett's Rock Star series. Teri would come to some of the house parties on Sunday night to sing alongside the contestants and the house band. She was down to earth and still a powerhouse! Here was a chance for me to see her with her band a few years later.
August 2002, Dallas AAJA Convention
Julie Dam and I pose with the wonderful Meshach Taylor, known for his roles in Designing Women and Criminal Minds. Taylor died in 2014.
October 2009, Fox Studios LA, Simpsons party
I think Homer Simpson qualifies as a huge celebrity.
New York 1998, Discover Stars on Ice
This is Ekaterina Gordeeva signing autographs backstage at Madison Square Garden following the Stars on Ice show.
August 2000, New York and Clifford the Big Red Dog
What is it with me and non-human celebrities?
July 1998, Yankee Stadium, Joe Torre
I was working on a profile of pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez when I got a chance to interview Joe Torre. Yes, it was very exciting. A wonderful photographer took pictures of my time there; otherwise it would have been only a memory.
Jan. 1, 2004, New York's Lincoln Center, Lord of the Rings marathon
Yes, Erika Steininger, Erin Mielke and I were crazy enough to sit through the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, extended versions, natch, just to get to the Q&A with (from left) Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Andy Serkis and Bernard Hill. It was at Avery Fisher Hall, though, so, you know, classy.
Emmy Awards 2011
Here is a very blurry photo of me holding Jeff Probst's Outstanding Reality Show Host Emmy for, like 10 seconds. Picture courtesy Lori Dellicolli!
Ironman 2004 with Ryan Sutter, Kona Hawaii, Oct. 16, 2004
Thrilling to join Trista and Ryan Sutter in Kona, along with their friends and family, for Ryan’s Ironman. Photos for People by Bo Bridges. Here is Ryan in the run portion, No. 178.
'American Idol' Season 9 hometown visits, Toledo with Crystal Bowersox, May 15, 2010
I got to spend 24 hours with the American Idol crew sent to Toledo for the homecoming of Crystal Bowersox. I should put all the images in a Flickr album because the day was exhilarating. So many emotions for Crystal, who ultimately placed second to Lee DeWyze.
